Train-spotting in Cheyenne, Wyoming

Train-spotting in Cheyenne, Wyoming

One of our members has recently returned from a dream trip of a lifetime – a trip to the USA to see up close and personal, The Big Boy at Union Pacific Steam.

Graham has a passion for trains, stemming from a career in the industry. After speaking to Classic Holidays about his trip, it was clear how much it has meant to him. (Graham’s wife Marie shared with us that she also enjoyed a staycation at home while Graham chased the train dream!)

Graham first stayed at the Fairfield Inn, which gave him the perfect base to discover the delights of Denver.

The Little America was Graham’s base to visit Union Pacific Railways for The Big Boy. The Director of Heritage Steam operations, took Graham for a tour through the Steam Shop to see the locomotive.

The Big Boy is an impressive sight for sore eyes. Only 25 Big Boys were ever built, with only 8 surviving. Being the heaviest single expansion steam locomotive ever built, it was designed for transporting heavy freight trains without assistance.

The Big Boy, locomotive 4014, was acquired from California. It arrived in Cheyenne in May 2014 with the aim of restoration to full working order. It will take approximately 5 years to complete restoration before it takes its place on the Union Pacific System.

Restorations were also in order No.844 with plans to return to the mainline in July 2016.

Graham then headed to Durango where he checked into the Best Western Rio Grande. His agenda was simple: the Silverton Round-Trip train. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which is a 3 ft narrow gauge heritage railroad, winds through pristine back-country of the San Juan Mountains travelling from Durango, to historic Silverton. In 2009 it was voted as one of the World’s Top 10 most exciting train rides.

Graham believed the trip was an “amazing experience” and enjoyed the journey.

Thank you Graham for allowing Classic Holidays to not just book your dream trip, but also letting us share in your wonderful memories. We look forward to hearing about your next trip!
