History of Vacation Village
History of Vacation Village
Vacation Village was founded in 1979 by Victor Jacobs, purposely built as a timeshare property with a vision of providing an unforgettable holiday experience for its members and guests.
Situated in the unspoilt coastal town of Port Macquarie, the resort welcomed its first members in October 1980 and was completed in time for Christmas in 1981.
After more than 20 years in the timeshare industry, Vacation Village became a Classic Managed Resort in 2006. General Manager Rebecca Morris arrived at the resort in 2014 and has not only seen the property continue to thrive, but the area becomes one of the state’s fastest growing.
How has the area changed since the development of the Resort?
Rebecca: The area has grown tremendously! On the south side of the resort the property was used for cattle grazing; now the entire surrounding area is residential. The entrance roads to Settlement Point are different and members can now say they own timeshare on an island following the new road and bridge access. The Port Macquarie-Hastings population is now up around 80,000 people and forecast as one of the fastest growing areas in NSW.
What do you think makes the Resort special?
Its history, stories and the members who still enjoy returning each year. Over the years it has been a home away from home for our members and as I have read in numerous old newsletters ‘a continuing place of friendship and fellowship with a pleasant family atmosphere.’
What is your background in the industry?
I started as a casual housekeeper at Beachcomber International Coolangatta in 2009. In 2010, I stepped into a 2IC housekeeper position and later as an Executive housekeeper in 2012. During this time, I was given the opportunity to fill in for reception which assisted in expanding my knowledge at a much faster pace. Following a 4 week period where I looked after a Resort for managers on annual leave, the manager position became available at Vacation Village. I commenced my role as Onsite Manager for Vacation Village in December 2014.
What do you like most about this role?
I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories. Members and guests always have a favourite holiday memory and I strive to provide an experience they may then be telling someone else about. I also like the challenges I face, learning things in areas I would never have done if it wasn’t for my job.
What improvements have you made to the Resort since you took the job?
During my 3 years here we have continued with apartment updates in the lounge rooms, completed a tennis court refurbishment, replaced the maintenance shed, minor updates to the games room, a permanent shade over the kiddies wader pool has been installed and a new herb and veggie garden. We have completed various building repairs and upgrades and created a library space.
