South Island Spotlight: Wine

South Island Spotlight: Wine

With long hours of sunshine and nights cooled by sea breezes, it’s no surprise that New Zealand’s thriving wine industry has put it firmly on the map.

Whatever pleases your palette, the South Island will open a world of discovery with each glass.

Wanaka

The southern-most point of New Zealand’s wine country is the only area with high ultraviolet light, highly refractive soils and long hours of sun, providing the perfect trio to serve up an assortment of vino varieties, from Sauvignon Blanc to Chardonnay and Gamay Noir.

Rippon uses a unique organic process to produce their wine. Rejecting chemicals in favour of holistic winemaking methods, they produce some of the best Pinot Noir on offer along with a bright fruity Riesling.

Akaroa

With volcanic soil and rugged terrain, it’s Akaroa’s environment that engrains a unique character in all the wine it produces.

Nestled on the slopes of a hill overlooking the historic town, Takamatua Valley Vineyards craft a range of boutique wines. One of the country’s first producers of Pinot Gris, their drop shows rich flavours, contrasted with candy aromas and is an absolute winner for lovers of white wine.

Queenstown

The wineries in Queenstown and the nearby town of Gibbston are renowned for producing some of the globe’s best Pinot Noir. With 80 wineries within 40 minutes of Queenstown’s town centre, there is no shortage of cellar doors to explore and world class drops to taste.

Amisfield is Queenstown’s premier winery and doesn’t only serve up a five star view, but a glass of Pinot to match. Its dramatic landscape delivers the perfect conditions for cool-climate viticulture, dubbing them one of Central Otago’s specialist producers of aromatic white wines.

Located just ten minutes from Christchurch Airport, Melton Estate is a boutique winery with a modern restaurant and event venue set on 12 acres in West Melton. Combining winery style and sophisticated facilities, Melton Estate is amongst lush pinot noir vines and produces boutique wines that include: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Rose, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and award-winning Sparkling Riesling known as “Summer Love”.
