Classic Celebrates Five Years of Inspiring Students

In 2018, Classic Holidays is celebrating five years of our groundbreaking student work experience program, Work Inspiration. More than 600 Gold Coast high school students have now participated in Work Inspiration since 2013 – helping them to identify their strengths and changing the course of many of their lives.

Developed in partnership with The Smith Family, Work Inspiration has given students the opportunity to not only recognise but reach their future career goals, guided by Classic Holidays staff mentors in areas from resort reception to landscaping and maintenance as well as head office roles.

Classic Holidays is now a national leader of the program, empowering hundreds of students to plan for their future by identifying the types of jobs and career pathways they want to pursue – not just within the hospitality sector but also further afield. Of these students, more than 50 have been placed in traineeships with Classic Holidays and 17 have secured ongoing employment. This year, two of these employees were nominated for awards at the 2018 ‘Benny Awards’ – our group wide awards recognising star performers in all areas of the business. This is a fantastic outcome, not just for these talented individuals, but also for the future of our company.

Run across three business areas, the program offers students the chance to go behind the scenes in an area that is best suited to them, interacting with mentors from various roles across Classic Holidays’ resort network and head office, as well as completing practical projects and developing their employability skills.

This year, Classic Holidays was honoured to received national recognition for our work with young people. Classic’s Julia Whitton, Program Coordinator and Sandy Point Resort Manager was filmed by the National Community of Practice – National Employer Reference Group (NERG) earlier this year to explain how Work Inspiration has benefited the students, mentors and the company.

Looking to the future, Classic Holidays will continue to work with Gen-Z, Arcadia and all of the local schools on the Gold Coast who are interested in being involved in the program. We’ll also broaden our focus to work with disability and young people with learning difficulties. Importantly, we’ll continue to talk at schools to share these amazing stories of change and development, and run more follow up programs that show Work Inspiration doesn’t stop at the door – our resort teams and mentors get so much out of following these students into the start of their careers and beyond.
